Food Security

The Food Security Working Group comprises NGOs, The Sustainability Institute and the Stellenbosch University looking at the question: “How do we move from local food relief to food security in Stellenbosch?” In 2021 the group looked at food flows, understanding who the actors are and what drives their decisions around food supply and food demand.

2022 Focus areas
  • Continuation of the mapping started in 2021
  • Local market access for small-scale farmers especially with restaurants, NGO / ECD sectors. 
  • GIS Mapping of small-scale farmers
  • Facilitate marketing for local producers through local networks; 
  • Modeling informal markets
  • Bilateral communication and information-sharing amongst local food producers.
  • Documenting the barriers and opportunities for sustainability in local food systems
