The SA Mental Health Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving mental health and well-being in the Stellenbosch community. We are seeking funding support to continue our vital work of providing mental health resources, combating loneliness among students, and increasing access to mental health services in underserved communities.
Project Overview: The SA Mental Health Foundation aims to address the pressing mental health needs of students in Stellenbosch, as well as those in surrounding underserved communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on mental health, exacerbating feelings of loneliness and isolation among students. Our proposed initiatives focus on combating loneliness, promoting meaningful friendships, conducting mental health screenings, and offering educational seminars on mental health topics.
Loneliness and Friendships: Loneliness has emerged as a significant concern among students in Stellenbosch, hindering their overall well-being and academic success. Through our funded events, we will create opportunities for students to connect, form friendships, and combat social isolation. These events will include group activities, social gatherings, and mentorship programs, fostering a sense of belonging and support within the student community.
Mental Health Screening in Underserved Areas: Access to mental health services remains a challenge for many communities around Stellenbosch, especially those with limited resources. We propose utilising a portion of the funding to conduct mental health screenings in these underserved areas. These screenings will help identify individuals at risk of mental health issues and connect them with appropriate resources and care. By reaching out to these communities, we can contribute to reducing the mental health treatment gap.
Educational Seminars: Education and awareness play a vital role in destigmatising mental health issues and promoting overall well-being. We plan to organise seminars and workshops centered around mental health topics, open to both students and the general public. These events will provide a platform for sharing knowledge, offering coping strategies, and fostering understanding of mental health challenges. Expert speakers and mental health professionals will facilitate these seminars, ensuring high-quality and evidence-based information.
Project Impact and Outcomes: With your generous support, the SA Mental Health Foundation will be able to make a significant impact on the mental well-being of students and underserved communities in Stellenbosch. The anticipated outcomes of our initiatives include:
- Increased social connections and reduced loneliness among students.
- Early identification and intervention for mental health issues in underserved communities.
- Enhanced mental health literacy among students and the general public.
- Improved access to mental health resources and support.
- Strengthened community awareness and support for mental health concerns.
Volunteer Opportunities
With our NPO there are fantastic volunteer opportunities for those eager to make a positive impact. One standout event is Friendship Friday, held monthly on the first Friday. It's a great chance to engage with the community and contribute to the vibrant atmosphere.
For psychology students studying at Stellenbosch University, we hope to create a unique avenue to gain hands-on experience while making a difference. The initiative aims to create a platform for students to actively participate in mental health screenings, particularly in underfunded and privileged areas. This not only provides invaluable experience but also addresses a crucial need in these communities.
