Empowering Change: ChangeAbility’s Impact on Communities in the Western Cape

ChangeAbility, a non-profit organisation, is dedicated to creating a world where all individuals, regardless of their abilities, are recognised and valued. Through their comprehensive support services, they empower over 400 beneficiaries with disabilities in Macassar (City of Cape Town), Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Klapmuts (Stellenbosch) and Groendal (Franschhoek).

ChangeAbility: Empowering Individuals with Disabilities

Disability network collaboration is crucial for providing comprehensive support, enhancing advocacy, and reaching underserved areas. ChangeAbility has been a leader in fostering collaboration, founding the Stellenbosch (2014) and Helderberg (2019) Disability Networks. The organisation has partnered with various organisations to share knowledge, resources, and best practices. This collaboration strengthens communities, offers emotional support, attracts funding, and promotes inclusivity. Ultimately, it helps create sustainable solutions that improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Building Inclusive Communities Through Collaboration

ChangeAbility has established a strong referral system in addition to founding disability networks. The organisation has collaborated with the Stellenbosch Municipality on various projects, including events, venues, and a current tender. ChangeAbility also maintains ongoing partnerships and information exchange with Stellenbosch University and the Stellenbosch Hospital. Furthermore, the organisation has regular contact with social workers from StellCare, the Department of Social Development (DSD) and is affiliated to Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities.

SCAN: A Network of Support

“The Stellenbosch Civil Advocacy Network (SCAN) has significantly supported ChangeAbility in reaching the community and fostering collaboration,” says ChangeAbility CEO, Cindy Wiggett-Barnard. Through SCAN’s comprehensive website, ChangeAbility has gained greater visibility, enabling more effective outreach and engagement with stakeholders. The network’s working groups have provided valuable platforms for sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices, promoting collaboration and innovation among diverse organisations. Additionally, SCAN’s use of GIS mapping has been instrumental in identifying community needs and service gaps, allowing ChangeAbility to strategically target and expand its services. This mapping technology has enhanced the efficiency and impact of ChangeAbility’s initiatives, ensuring that support reaches the areas where it is most needed.

“With the right people in our corner, we know we can accomplish anything. Our peer supporters have been crucial to our success. Because they live with disabilities and in the communities we interact with, they are the backbone of what we do.”

Creating a More Equitable Future

ChangeAbility’s impact extends far beyond their direct beneficiaries. By fostering collaboration and advocating for inclusivity, they are creating a more equitable and compassionate society. Their work is a testament to the power of community and the belief that everyone deserves to live a fulfilling life.
